Gary Hill is one of the most important contemporary artists investigating the relationships between words and electronic images -- an inquiry that has dominated the video art of the past decade. Originally trained as a sculptor, Hill began working in video in 1973 and has produced a major body of single-channel videotapes and video installations that includes some of the most significant works in the field of video art. His first tapes explored formal properties of the emerging medium, particularly through integral conjunctions of electronic visual and audio elements.

Positive HIV vs. Positive Thinking

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 06:06 AM PDT

When someone from the Perak Family Health Association called me some time back, telling me that one HIV+ guy was interested in Buddies, I thought it was another case of a PLHIV looking for support. The guy, apparently got hold of one of our rather old brochures (when Buddies was still under the then PFHA), which was why the call went to the PFHA instead.

The lady from PFHA then gave my number to this guy, Majid. So when Majid called me, I arranged for us to meet up at the Buddies centre. I figured I'd need to meet him first before I decide whom to assign as his buddy.

Well, we met up at the centre, and we talked. Indeed, he was looking for a buddy. He figured if he becomes our client, he could participate in whatever events we organise for our clients.

But, after talking to him, I thought he was more suitable as a volunteer rather than a client. He was, after all, looking for activities to keep himself busy. He was also rather cool and calm, and being HIV positive himself, he should be able to understand the other PLHIVs better.

So I asked him if he'd consider becoming a volunteer instead. After explaining to him what we volunteers usually do, Majid agreed to become a volunteer. We didn't take him in as a client at all. We took him in straight away as a buddy.

And so Majid became a volunteer. He joined us for visits, he joined us for our annual family day, he joined us for talks and exhibitions, and more importantly, he also joined us for clinic duties. And I must say he did a good job. He did seem rather quiet, but he listens well, and that's good, because we need good listeners.

It has been more than a year now. Majid has already been confirmed as a volunteer and has already been given a few cases to handle on his own without the need of having a senior volunteer to supervise him.

Becoming a volunteer has done wonders for him. He seemed to be more confident with himself. Definitely by doing voluntary work, he managed to become a more positive thinking person. And guess what? His CD4 rose from about 600+ when he was first diagnosed to over 1,000 now… without even having to start on anti-retrovirals!

Most of the time, when people are diagnosed HIV positive, their thinking becomes negative, especially when they don't get the necessary support. Their condition then easily deteriorates.

But if they instead choose to think positively, and act positively, like what Majid did, look what has become of him now!

I wish more PLHIVs would come forward and become volunteers. However, I know for a fact many of the lady PLHIVs under me are not ready to become volunteers… they still need help themselves to become independent!

Universal Studios Singapore: Hollywood & New York

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 04:04 AM PDT

Part 2: This post will cover another 2 zones from the 7 zones of Universal Studios Singapore, the Hollywood and New York.

Universal Studio SG - attractions 1

New York and Hollywood are basically the 2 zones that you would 1st encounter as you walk in from the entrance.

Universal Studio Singapore - (6)

Universal Studio Singapore - (5)

Take a quick peep at this video, it will give an idea of the atmosphere and surroundings of the place like no pictures would!

Very merry isn't it?

Loud music, hustle and bustle atmosphere, loads of people, scenic street lined with very realistic buildings; where even the pavement you walk on are designed exactly like if you are indeed in Hollywood.

Universal Studio Singapore Hollywood & New York (12)

So, if you are wondering what is Universal Studios Singapore is all about, I can tell you it is about the experience. Like any other theme parks, it is a cool place for families, friends & couples to enjoy and share precious time together, and to just relax and have fun. ;-) .

And here goes, the tons of pics I took…

Universal Studio Singapore Hollywood & New York (8)

This feels so American to me, popcorn and hot dogs vendors at the 'street side'.

Lunch was at Mel's Drive In, my default choice simply cos they got burgers!! Hehe..

Universal Studio Singapore Mels drive in (5)

And since it is a drive-in, it made sense to have cars in front..any idea what model are these cars?? All I can think of is "vintage"…

Universal Studio Singapore Mels drive in (6)

I just got to do the car model wannabe pose ;-) .

Universal Studio Singapore Mels drive in (2)

No pork burgers so I settled for the Big Chilli Burger, Mel's famous thick vanilla milkshake and my set came with thick chunky fries. Total: SGD10.60.

Universal Studio Singapore Mels drive in burger (3)

Much much better than McD's no doubt, but I still find MOS burger patties juiciest compared to other fast food chains. No complains on the condiments though, plenty of veg, gooey cheese and pickles thrown in for measure. Mel's milkshakes are seriously thick but was a bit too sweet for me. The thick cut fries were perfect fluffy crabs.

As you walk around, don't be surprised if you bump into some celebrity. Just be a papparazi and snap some pics! LOL.

This feels British to me instead..those brown long chairs at the side walk, with the quaint tea house behind. Very London no?

Universal Studio Singapore Hollywood & New York (15)

The Subway..

Glitzy, extravagant premier shows..

Dandy hats can be found here at the Brown Derby. Even the round roof reminds me of the bowler hat.

Universal Studios Singapore - Hollywood

Lights Camera Action! By Steven Spielberg .

Universal Studios Singapore - New york

Just Louis's Pizza, for some authentic New York pizza. This is in the New York zone, of course.

Universal Studios Singapore - New York-2

In conclusion, the New York and Hollywood zone is great for a leisurely stroll & for those who appreciate picturesque ambience.

It is also a good prelude to the rest of Universal Studios, as both of these zones are right at the main entrance after you pass the ticketing booths. It is also more relaxing compared to the rest of the zones which are more action-oriented with rides and other attractions.

Next post: The Sci Fi Zone, where the world fastest/scariest and tallest ride is due to open soon!

Letter thirteen - Day seventeen of your vacation

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 03:54 AM PDT

Dearest J,

Just found out that William Shakespeare and I have the same birth date. Somehow he passed away on the same date too. I bought a copy of Othello today, I doubt I will understand much of the text, however, I understand this excerpt of the text in the introduction - Emilia's monologue:

Let the husbands know
Their wives have sense like them: they see, and smell,
And have their palates both for sweet and sour,
As husbands have. What is it that they do,
When they change us for others? Is it sport?
I think it is. And doth affection breed it?
I think it doth. Is't frailty that thus errs?
Is it so too. And have not we affections,
Desires for sport, and frailty, as men have?
Then let them use us well; else let them know,
The ills we do, their ills instruct us so.

Spoke to my mom on the phone today, she said she misses you. She said she has pinned up your photo in the house so she can see you more.

Been singing your new song, am going to try to finish another draft of additional lyrics by this weekend.

My dance gig went well last night. This morning I banked in my first payment from dancing. It was a simple job but now I see that I have to be so much better in my technique to feel comfortable taking people's money for dancing.

But I believe I did well last night.

Going to a reading audition later, am glad to be out of my audition-phobic phase.

I was walking to my car yesterday and suddenly thought of what I used to do during my single days. I remember I did many things on my own, going to shows, walking around town alone, etc. Things weren't very different after I started seeing you, I still do many things alone. But we did many things together too. At that moment while I was walking to my car what hit me was a question..

Am I now in a place where I have to remember how to live as a single woman in this place?

I have never been a willing candidate to openly say that couple-hood is a better place than single-hood. We always know that we are just lucky to have found each other in this sea of people of different likes and outlook.

Over the years through reading and observation, I came to notice that (I've shared this with you before) married, or attached women do seem to have less emotional issues. I was a big advocate of `be-single-and-be-happy' before we started going out. Seeming and I then got interviewed by a magazine (2002) about being single and happy, the irony was by the time the magazine came out on the news stand, I was already seeing you and was deliriously happy about us.

The last years I realised that I have built so much of my existence around you, maybe to some friends it didn't seem that way. I hardly drag you to all of my outings, I don't hang out with much with your friends. I do my travelling mostly with my friends, parties, work stuff, in my own circle. But my clients, friends, family, when I talk, they hear you through me. Justin says this, Justin says that...you are like, the invisible force behind me, the excited yapping gap talking away.

The last one year my friends saw more of you, since you started riding more, and since we moved into the new home. I know you enjoy their company and they enjoy much of your contented silence in the corner, occasionally brushing my ears to stop me from talking about you.

This is a painful & beautiful memory. I had you for a little less than a decade, you, who whole-heartedly wants and hopes the best for me; who believes in me, no matter how hard I fall on my face; you love whole-heartedly and deeply; you see the world in its true beauty and you focus only in the beauty of humankind, and yet is intelligent enough to walk away from its ugly manifestation; you are able to see what is important and what is trivial. You were the whole world for me.

Maybe I ought to have reserve some...? Some love for others?

You taught me how to be a better person, I learned to breathe when am angry. You taught me not to waste my energy and time on things that I am able to change. You said to focus my energy on things that I change, like how many hours I spend on practising my singing. You taught me to respect every object. You taught me to see the good in people, to see the funny side of a bad situation, to see the silver lining there. You told me to put my ego in the pocket and make peace. You taught me how to love, with passion and intelligence.

So, as painful as the beautiful memory is, I have to pick up the pieces and brave the single-hood, with pride, and love. I can only do this with your love.

Am running late again, this was meant to be...this wasn't meant to be such a long rambling. I enjoy talking to you, as always.

I love you.

The Crazy Old Days

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 05:19 AM PDT

I missed the crazy old days with my crazy old ways.

What happened to the spontaneous me that did crazy old stunts and ate crazy food?

People age and settle and I've been rather please with my apartment and life and ways.

But every now and then, I think of the crazy old days and my crazy old stunts and smile.

There was once a crazy young exuberant girl that would travel to the ends of the world to seek her adventure and find her entertainment and explore her world.

blurry me

It was the good old days.

Rihanna Feat. Drake – What’s My Name Lyrics

Rihanna Feat. Drake – What's My Name Lyrics

[Rihanna]
Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Whats my name, whats my name

[Drake]
I heard you good with them soft lips
Yeah you know word of mouth
The square root of 69 is 8 something
Cuz I've been tryna work it out, oooow
Good weed, white wine
I come alive in the night time
Okay, away we go
Only thing we have on is the radio
Ooooh, let it play, say you gotta leave
But I know you wanna stay
You just waiting on the track to finish girl
The things we could do in twenty minutes girl
Say my name, say my name
Wear it out, its getting hot, crack a window, air it out
I can get you through a mighty long day
Soon as I go the text you gon right is gon say…

[Rihanna]
Not everybody knows how to work my body
Knows how to make me want it
Boy you stay up on it
You got that something that keeps me so off balance
Baby you're a challenge, lets explore your talent

[Chorus]
Hey boy I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me
Hey boy, I really wanna be with you
Cause you just my type
Ooh na na na na
I need a boy to really take it over
Looking for a girl to put you over
Oooooh, oooooh

Hey boy I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me
Hey boy, I really wanna be with you
Cause you just my type
Ooh na na na na
I need a boy to really take it over
Looking for a girl to put you over
Oooooh, oooooh

Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Whats my name, whats my name

[Rihanna]
Baby you got me, aint nowhere that I'd be
Then with your arms around me
Back and forth you rock me
So I surrender, to every word you whisper
Every door you enter, I will let you in

[Chorus]
Hey boy I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me
Hey boy, I really wanna be with you
Cause you just my type
Ooh na na na na
I need a boy to really take it over
Looking for a girl to put you over
Oooooh, oooooh

You're so amazing, you took the time to figure me out
Thats why you take me, way past the point of turning me on
You bout to break me, I swear you got me losing my mind

Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name

Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Ooh na na, what's my name
Whats my name, whats my name

[Chorus]
Hey boy I really wanna see if you can go downtown with a girl like me
Hey boy, I really wanna be with you
Cause you just my type
Ooh na na na na
I need a boy to really take it over
Looking for a girl to put you over
Oooooh, oooooh

Never mind my muscles, find me a mate

By Maureen Koh

(Pardon me, But seriously, WTF?!)

HERE'S the irony: She cared so much about her body that she spent years carving,
sculpting, perfecting a body that most men would want - for himself.

Maybe care is too mild a word; Obsessed, perhaps, would be more apt.
Obsessed enough to resort to steroids to alter her body.
Obsessed beyond what most men would do.

And now that Miss Elaine Lye, or El, as she prefers to be known, has achieved near physical perfection, she has become a physical oddity - as a woman in a man's body.
The result: Curious stares, crude remarks, sniggers.
Never mind. The 29-year-old gym owner from Ipoh
claims she has become accustomed to the unflattering attention.

But she hates all the questions about her sexuality and sexual preferences.
But can anyone blame her critics?
If she were a man, she'd be considered attractive -
boyish face, sinewy body and bulging biceps.
Miss Lye told The New Paper on Sunday:
"Yes, I have the body of a man. But I have the heart of a woman."
A woman's heart that yearns for a man's love.
"I just want a man to accept and love me as I am," she added.

Her wish? To walk down the aisle, with a man.
Miss Lye is not a transgender.
She was petite and girlish until two years ago,
when she underwent an intensive bodybuilding programme.

"That's when my appearance - and life - changed," Miss Lye said.
The 1.54m-tall woman went from 42kg to 62kg, and her voice turned hoarse.
Steroids hastened the transformation.
It was a deadly gamble.
Sportsmen have long been known to resort to the illegal use
of steroids to boost performances.
Bodybuilders often resort to steroid abuse as a short cut to a perfect body.
But because of the deadly side effects, steroids are banned in competitive sports.
Miss Lye began taking steroids in 2008 but claimed that
she had done so for only a cycle of 12 weeks.

She admitted that she was aware of the risks.
"Of course, it's impt to use (steroids) in the right way and not abuse it," said Miss Lye.
"That's why I stopped after that one cycle as it's important to let the body 'rest'."

But her desire for a perfect body led to the break-up
with her boyfriend of seven years.
He could not accept her obsession.

★ Another irony: They met when they were working together in a gym.

Enrique Iglesias - Heartbeat (ft. Nicole Scherzinger) Lyrics

I saw you talking on the phone
I know that you are not alone
But you steal my heart away
Yeah you steal my heart away

You're acting like you're on your own
But I saw you standing with a girl
Stop tryn' to steal my heart away,
Stop tryn' to steal my heart away

I don't know where we going
I don't know who we are

I can feel your heartbeat x2
He said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
Running through me
Feel your heartbeat
She said
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
Running through me
Heartbeat
Feel your heartbeat

Maybe it's the way you move
You got me dreaming like a fool
That I can steal your heart away
I can steal your heart away

No matter what it is you think
I'm not the kind of girl you think
And give my heart away
Stop tryin' steal my heart away

I don't know where we going
I don't know who we are

I can feel your heartbeat
He said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
He said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
Running through me
Heartbeat
Feel your heartbeat
She said
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
Running through me

Stop stealing my heart away x3
You're stealing my heart away

I don't know where we going
I don't know who we are
Feels like we are flowing
High above the stars, the stars, the stars, the stars

I can feel your heartbeat
He said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
He said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
Running through me
I can feel your heartbeat
She said
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
She said to me
I can feel your heartbeat
Running through me
Heartbeat
Feel your heartbeat

Stop stealing my heart away
Talk to me girl
Stop stealing my heart away
Give it to me boy
Stop stealing my heart away
Say it to me girl
You're stealing my heart away

Stop stealing my heart away x3
Your heartbeat

The consunmate ease in which he pushed his machine into the redline & the ability to keep them neat lines despite the skimpily-attired distraction.

Cool or wot!!?!

Me thinks this should be mandotory viewing fer all students looking to apply unwavering attention to the task at hand.

Mahathir says we need an opposition but Mukhriz blames the opposition!!!!

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 11:09 PM PDT

exclusive Three days before polling day, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told voters that the country needs an opposition that can hold up a mirror to the government.

Indeed, Mukhriz has a lot to learn from his father. If Mukhriz had been doing well, he would have silenced the opposition. Nevertheless, the opposition is doing Mukhriz a big favor by holding up a mirror to the government!

We did it OUR way

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 09:44 PM PDT

Democracy is government based on faith, not religious faith but faith that ordinary citizens, when well-educated and free to choose, will choose their leaders wisely, being persuaded by logical argument rather than swayed by emotional rhetoric.

In a democracy everyone, male, female, rich, poor, are equal before the law. They are free to express their opinions and criticise their leaders.

It's impossible for any government to satisfy everyone all the time, thus in a democracy there is lots of disagreement and discussion that may be misinterpreted as chaos by people who do not understand the central premise of democracy; faith in the people to make wise choices of leadership.

People in democracies, because of their freedoms, are able to freely collaborate, brainstorm and crowdsource to solve problems.

People in a democracy can sack a dysfunctional government and replace it.

Dictatorships lack the advantages of many minds, millions of minds, working together to solve problems.

Dictatorships lack flexibility to respond to changes in economies and societies.

Look at how during the past 20 years various countries have prospered following the collapse of the USSR.

Look at the track records of dictatorships compared to democracies. You will find democracies are not perfect but they are much better than dictatorships.

Dictatorship's main focus is to perpetuate themselves, not ensure national prosperity.

I have faith that Malaysians will choose wisely when choosing leaders
and a system of government. The future and fate of everyone in Malaysia, including that of my children, depends on the choices made by my fellow Malaysians.

Together we can achieve much more than any one of us alone.

Of that I am certain.

Later, we can say, "We did it OUR way".

My Kerala Trip: When You Need To Go, You Go

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 08:46 PM PDT

The 12-hour car journey from Bangalore to our destination, VanaMoolika, was an experience to savour. I say 'savour' because it will be something I will remember for a long time to come.

Travels must be accompanied by humour and curiosity – only then will the journey be as memorable as the destination!

I was like a child in a sweet shop – for India is a bit like candy, multi-coloured, multi-taste!

It is, like Nic says, a feast for all five senses.

As unfamiliar as it was to me, it wasn't all together new to me.

I grew up with a best friend who had acclimatized me to everything Indian.

I used to hang about her home during Deepavali. I had Indian neighbours – I grew up playing with them. I love exploring Little India in Penang especially looking at trinkets and stuff at my favourite Indian mini mart, Ramani's on Penang Street. And eating Indian food is something I don't have problems with. (I used to proclaim I must've been an reincarnated Indian princess much to my bestie's amusement the way I drooled over her mom's chicken sambar!)

The 12-hour journey would not be so uncomfortable if the roads were not so pot-holed or dark. Sleeping was out of the question. I dozed off part of the way but it wasn't a fitful sleep. We stopped a few times for toilet breaks. Our local driver had no problem just doing his little business by some bushes near the road. OK, we're Malaysians so we didn't want to do anything by the roadside.

The funniest toilet break happened when we stopped near a mosque. It was almost 5am. We were told there was a toilet behind the mosque so all of us women went in search of that elusive loo. We were sleepy and grumpy. The loo consisted of three low cubicles sans doors! In India, squat loos are common. I didn't mind the squatting type of toilet.

Imagine…our bladders are bursting, it's dark (no electric lights at all) and the loos have no doors! This is where I couldn't give a damn. I had to go so I had to go. As it was dark, no one could see our privates anyway. The water from the tap was a mere trickle so my hand sanitizer gel came in handy! And just as we got out of the dark toilet, the morning prayers from the mosque sounded. That was quite a moment!

I know, we all look intimidated by the shack!

I know, we all look intimidated by the shack!

Our bladders were full because a few hours prior we had our 'snack' break at a shack which looked like it catered for truck-drivers and bus drivers. At 12 midnight (India time) which was 3am Malaysian time, we were sitting in a tumbledown shack in the middle of nowhere having Bombay toast, chapati and a thick dhal parapu curry. It must've been something as we look like wide-eyed aliens in a shack full of truck drivers! Almost everyone stuck to their bottled water though hot coffee was available. We were scaredy cats and didn't want to take chances.

Coffee in India needs a bit of getting used to. It's the pure thing where it's just kopi-o (coffee and sugar). Unlike our coffee beans which have been roasted with margarine and sugar and what-not, theirs is just made from pure coffee beans. (Speaking of which, you cannot find Coffee Bean or Starbucks in India, according to Jegan, our guide as India does not allow foreign coffee chains into the country. The local coffee chains are either Coffee Cafe or Coffee Day.) The Indian coffee is not thick and black like what we have in Malaysia. Theirs look like tea which has been brewing forever.

After another 2 hours of driving, we finally reached VanaMoolika in the Wayanad District. (GoogleMap says the distance from Bangalore to Pulpally is about 4 hours. Now we know that is not right. Google thinks all roads are American freeways?)

This is Pulpally town

This is Pulpally town

Before reaching this hilly area, we drove past the town of Pulpally. In the early dawn, many Indian men and women were up and about, carrying steel buckets. I later found out they were walking to milk cows.

One has it made if one owns cows in India...for milk, for dung!

If I had to wake up, walk a long way to get to the cows and milk them or get milk from the farmer, I wonder if I'd want to drink milk. It seemed like a lot of work. Do I consider myself lucky that I drink milk out of a carton instead of milking the cow? Not necessarily.

The people of Pulpally seemed relaxed, with all the time in the world. They retire early to bed, as early as 9pm and are awake before dawn.

Finally we reach VanaMoolika...see the luggage on top of the car?

I cheered internally when our convoy of Innova's drove into the curved driveway of VanaMoolika. It was 7am then and the morning mist was slowly dissipating.

After a whole night's journey, we had arrived in VanaMoolika. VanaMoolika is a centre which supports a community of women farmers. These women are organized under a woman leader each to plant herbs which are then sold to the centre for making Ayurvedic medicines, hair care, skincare and body care products. The centre comprises dormitories for men and women, mess hall and some special stand-alone chalets within the forest surrounding this hilly area. It also has its own HACCP certified herb processing facility.

We would be spending 3 days here before we leave for an Ayurvedic centre near Kochi.

Some people "have" to get their nails done once a week. Some "need" to get their hair washed at hair saloons every week. Some go for their wax sessions every once a month. Me? I "need/want/must" get my eyebrows threaded at least twice a month, no matter how busy I am.

How many of you have done a pap smear/gone for one recently? Many women delay getting their pap smears or don't go at all, saying they're too busy bla bla bla... But what they don't realise is, how important regular checkups are in this day and age.

Cervical cancer is the second to breast cancer, in causing cancer deaths in women worldwide and is the 2nd most common cancer in Malaysian women.

Some of you probably haven't had a pap smear before. I'm not going to get into the details, but I'll explain the process – it's not that scary la. You just need to get past the idea of spreading your legs for your doctor. o_0

Pap Smear test

A swab is taken from the cervical wall to test for cell changes that might be an indication of an infection or a lead to cervical cancer. The doctor will also check the cervix for any abnormalities.

At what age should one do a Pap Smear?

Those who are 21 years and above and/or are sexually active should get a Pap Smear done once a year.

How does the Pap Smear test work?

A plastic (disposable) speculum into the vagina (to widen it) so the doctor can examine the cervix and take the swab. It is uncomfortable for a lot of women. But hey! A few minutes of discomfort is better than a lifetime of regret, no?

Does the Pap Smear test hurt?

It doesn't hurt. But like I said earlier, it's uncomfortable (slightly embarrassing too). Some people equate discomfort with pain. But don't worry. This procedure takes less than a minute, and you can keep your legs closed again. You may experience some spotting of blood a day or two after the test, and it is normal.

When should you do it?

The Pap Smear is best done 7-10 days after the start of the menstrual cycle. If you're too close to your menstrual cycle, the thickening of the cervix walls might mask any abnormalities and give you an uncertain reading.

I know the first time is always the scariest. To make things easier, why not do the test with your best friend? Or you could ask your husband/boyfriend to accompany you.

Tip:
  • Make sure you are comfortable with the doctor. If you prefer a lady doctor, ask for one.
  • RELAX. If you're tense, the cervix muscles would be stiff, and it might be more uncomfortable/painful for you.
  • HPV immunization is necessary. It DOES NOT guarantee that you'll be free from cervical cancer, but it protects you from the HPV viruses that are culprits to cervical cancer.

Malaysian tops Cambridge, heads to Singapore

ANALYSIS, Oct 19 – Malaysian first-class honours law graduate Tan Zhongshan, who won a slew of awards at Cambridge University including the Slaughter and May prize for best overall performance, is heading to Singapore to join its Legal Service commission, it was reported today.
But this is no longer an uncommon case in Malaysia which has been facing a brain drain problem for decades even as previous administrations did little to stem the tide of outgoing talent.
This has led to fears that the country is being hollowed out.
The Najib administration has taken the strongest steps yet to tackle the issue by proposing a Talent Corporation (Talentcorp) to lure talent and overseas Malaysians back as well as resolving the perennial government scholarship debate by awarding scholarships to all students who score 9As and above.
The prime minister has also been on a personal charm offensive abroad the past one year and told Malaysian communities in Belgium and Luxembourg this month that the Talentcorp will seek overseas Malaysians out and do what it takes to make them consider going home.
It is too early to tell however if the initiatives will be able to dent the numbers of qualified Malaysians moving abroad, particularly to Singapore which has over the years, honed its capacity to scour the world for top talent, including from Malaysia where students are recruited to the republic from as young as 15 years old.
In the case of Ipoh-born Tan, he was sponsored with an Asean scholarship by Singapore's Ministry of Education after completing his A-Levels at the Temasek Junior College there, The Star newspaper reported today.
It is unclear however if the Talentcorp's mandate also extends to preventing further hemorrhaging of talent even as it works to bring overseas Malaysians back.
While the prime minister's campaign to bring lure the Malaysian diaspora back to the country has been widely welcomed, he faces structural and branding challenges including the widespread perception that in Malaysia, ability is not appreciated and ranks well below other factors such as race and political connections.
The country also lags behind favoured immigration destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, US and UK in terms of livability, lifestyles, education systems and opportunities in areas such as scientific research, making it harder for many returnees to adjust even though they want to serve the country as well as be closer to friends and family.
The government's fledgling Economic Transformation Programme, which aims to elevate Kuala Lumpur to the top 20 in the world in terms of livability and economic activity could however help address some of the concerns.
The number of Malaysian migrants rose by more than 100-fold in a 45-year period, from 9,576 Malaysians in 1960 to 1,489,168 Malaysians in 2005, according to the World Bank which warned that a lack of human capital is a "critical constraint in Malaysia's ambition to become a high-income economy."
Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay also said recently that 304,358 Malaysians had migrated from March 2008 till August 2009 compared with 139,696 Malaysians in 2007.
The prime minister told Parliament this month that less than one per cent of 784,900 Malaysians working overseas have returned to the country during the past nine years with Singapore having the highest number of Malaysians with 303,828 people, followed by Australia with 78,858.

Potty Training – It’s The Best Day Ever

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 08:59 PM PDT

On Monday 18 Oct, I fetched Miki from Mama Rose's and he was not wearing his diapers. The  2 years and 9 months old kiddo was as hyper as usual but he pulled his pants slightly lower that his crack was showing. Apparently, his beloved babysitter had initiated the Potty Training and it took several days for Miki to stop insisting to wear Pampers.

I don't know what kind of psychological approach that Mama Rose had undertaken, these days Miki keep saying "Miki dah besar, tak payah pakai Pampers!". Just up until last Sunday he made me swaddled him in his towel after bath, carry him like baby while he made fake baby-ish cry – "Miki ni baby! Miki ni baby….Uwekkk! Uweekkk" Setiap kali mandi uols! *pengsan*

Anyway, when we arrived home I took him to the bathroom and we waited for awhile until he does the number one but he only looked at me, shrugged and said "Takde apa la Mummy! Takde.. takde…" As though we were waiting for the postman only to find we received no mail for the day.

His Daddy however took more drastic measures. He rolled the carpets in our living room for fear of Miki's leakage! Oh my sleek gold brown carpet.. Safely rolled up in the storeroom now making my cosy living room looking so bare and cold.. With a sigh I told Azman that I consider this as a sacrife for Miki to inch further in his childhood but Azman said nahhh… kalau dia kencing atas karpet ni kang susah, aku tak kuasa nak cuci… hmmphh!

Anyway, being really supportive, I know Miki was not comfortable wearing just pants terkontang-kanting like that, so we went to Jusco to get him some boxers.

As we arrived at ioi Mall, Miki was really happy! We had dinner and he ate a lot of vegetables with his rice so then he got a lollipop. He also got to choose for his own spender boxers, he got these really cute Chuggington ones! He also got new pair of slippers and a toy! Later on he was playing chase with his Daddy and poor the old man had to run almost the entire ioi Mall after the happyly laughing little boy..

Finally when Azman managed to catch him and he was carrying him to the car… Miki was singing, "IT'S THE BEST DAY EVERRRR….. IT'S THE BEST DAY EVERRR…." An original soundtrack from Spongebob. I thought it was just a coincidence but Azman believed that Miki really understand what he was singing! Either way that's just so freaking CUTE!

Up until bed time, Miki shee shee in the toilet once  and in his pants twice. The first time he wet his pants he took it off and came running to me telling  that there's water on the floor! Aiii sebijak-bijak pandai petah bercakap tapi tak tau identify kah?

Anyhow, I am sure soon Miki will get the hang of it be off the diapers for good at least during the day. Dah tak pakai Pampers dah anak aku… sighh…

Oktoberfest @ Sid’s!

Posted: 20 Oct 2010 03:28 AM PDT

Did you know that the first Oktoberfest took place in Munich in 1810?

That's 200 years ago!

The event initially started off as a horse race, in conjunction with a royal wedding.
Throughout the decades, it evolved to become the event that it is today – a celebration drawing 5 million people to Munich annually; with the rest of the world joining in with festivities of their own!

In KL, i went for the Oktoberfest that happened at Sid's TTDI.
Being the most popular bar hands down in the neighbourhood for the past two years,
it was the perfect venue for me to meet my friends there,
check out the festivities,
and drink to Oktoberfest!

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

The Facebook event invite said it's to start at 6pm.
Some friends of mine were joking (not) to meet at Sid's at 5:59pm.

I swear this is one of the only times people actually arrive BEFORE the event is to kick off.

Was quite surprised on how big the party was,
i thought it was just gonna be taking place in the bar itself,
not spreading out to take up the whole road with balloons, signs and stalls!

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

First things first.
And drinks come first.

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

I found out where to buy the vouchers, and purchased them before heading to the various taps for beers like Tiger, Guinness, Paulaner, Heineken, Kilkenny and Strongbow.

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

I've had countless pints of Tiger, Heineken, Guinness and Kilkenny,
and thought it'd be a good opportunity to try something i don't usually drink since they were having promos.

Paulaner and Strongbow were the most expensive there,
and since i'd already tried tens of pints of Strongbow at the Isle of Wight fest,
i figured i'd go for the Paulaner, the only beer i haven't tried before.

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

Brewed and imported from Munich, Germany;
Paulaner
is said to be the No. 1 German wheat beer
and is one of the official beers at Oktoberfest in Munich.

All the more reason to try it that day.

I'm surprised that my friends and i haven't tried this beer before…
(with probably the exception of Deep.
That dude has probably tried brands i've never noticed!)

paulaner

I read somewhere there are 4 brews under Paulaner,
and tried their Weissbier Dunkel – a medium-bodied one with a dark camarel hue.
It's quite yummy, and i like that its consistency has a 'wholesomeness' to it.
There's a slight sweetness to it, and i can imagine this would go great with some food.

Drink in hand,
i walked around to see what was going on:

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

A small (but very loud!) German brass band provided skippety beats.
It was really very jovial and made me feel like bopping my head from side to side while sipping on my Paulaner.

The band tried getting some volunteers up to dance,
and nobody did till they mentioned that there were free drinks for all participants.

It was quite funny so see an eager few silently slunk up to the front of the band once they said that!

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

Everyone had to do this amicable little dance where
they'd lean to the left,
lean to the right,
squat down,
stand up,
and do it all over again.

I bet all they were thinking of were the alcoholic rewards they were getting for it!

oktoberfest @ Sid's 2010

Juggler dropped a ball which hit my foot.
But it was okay.
If someone had spilled a beer on my new shoes,
that would NOT have been okay.

I thought the caricature would be interesting to do (my last one being a disaster in Bangkok),
but the line was an hour long,
so i turned around and said to a stranger, "Time better spent drinking!" and walked out of the queue.
He laughed at me.
